Poor Peruvian lilies. So incredibly durable as a flower they become ubiquitous- on every restauraunt table in America, they are one of the most underappreciated flowers of all time.
When I got married, the florist arrived with a large bouquet of dark purple delphiniums and mauve-rose alstromerias and it was one of the few things that made me cry that day. I was bitter for years afterward.
And yet now, I love them. This perky little flower is exactly what the doctor ordered for a dreary winter’s day: when the flowers outside aren’t numerous enough for picking.
I’ve never grown alstromeria but with new breeds, particularly the dark cherry red that I’ve shown above, they are definitely worth a look.
